This portrait of Sawai Ram Singh II is based on a photograph from the ‘Album of cartes de visite portraits of Indian rulers and notables’ by Bourne and Shepherd, circa 1870s. (See British Library, photo 127/ (8)). He was created a Knight Grand Commander of the Most Exalted Order of the Star of India in 1877. He was also created a Counsellor of the Empress in 1877 and a Knight Grand Commander of India in 1880. Ram Singh II’s accomplishments include vast improvements in public utilities, irrigation and education in Jaipur. He also had a passion for photography and set up a in Jaipur with the assistance of the British photographer T. Murray.
