The sitter is either Svati Tirunal Rama Varma (r.1813-46) or his younger brother Uthram Thirunal Marthanda Varma II (r.1846-60), sons of Maharani Gowri Lakshmi Bayi of Travancore.
For another portrait of the sitter which sold at auction, previously in the Stuart Cary Welch collection, where he is erroneously identified as the Raja of Calicut, see Sotheby’s, London, 31 May 2011, lot 132.
