Govardhanlalji succeeded his father, Girdhar Lalji, as the head priest of the Haveli of Shri Nathji in 1877. He was the most popular of all the tilkayats because of his humanitarian work which included opening schools, hospitals and a public library in Nathdwara. The tilkayats are thought to be the direct descendants of Vallabhacharya who founded the religious Krishna-centred Pushti sect of Vaishnavism. Wooden sandals belonging to Vallabhacharya are still worshipped in the Haveli of Shri Nathji. For another portrait of Govardhan Lalji, see lot 3.
