Lot Essay

The present ewer is distinctly South Indian in style, with a makara head spout and engraved design mimicking the decorative arms and armor of the region. The elegant shape, with a bulbous body rising from a flared foot and tapering into a thin, curved neck takes after the Mughal aftaba. Either side of the round belly is engraved with bands of geometric and vegetal scrolling patterns, depicting the god Krishna triumphing the snake Kaliya on one side and Rama brandishing his bow on the other.
