Lot Essay

This richly gilt bronze figure is solidly cast seated in with his hands folded in Buddha’s broad-shouldered form is fitted in a finely pleated draped over his left torso. His face bares a calm, meditative expression and is framed by pendulous earlobes and closely cropped curls surmounted by a flaming . Sri Lankan Buddha figures are noted for remarkable stylistic conservativism, having followed a consistent canon of proportions from their earliest origins. The later Kandyan period, however, saw considerable variation in the rendering of the robe, marked by precise linear and wave patterns worked into the folds.
