Lot Essay

This Kangra School illustration depicts Shiva teaching his yogic revelations to the accomplished sage Bhringisha. His revelations, that there is no distinction between dream and reality, and that embodied liberation comes from a release of singular or binary existence, is foundational to the nondualist tenants of Yoga. The two men sit in a beautifully layered, vertical landscape, while a group of vibrantly dressed woman drift by on a river boat in the foreground. The intensity of their discussion is indicated by their direct, mutual gaze. Shiva wears a draped animal pelt and simple beaded jewelry. A small deer stands by his side, representing the great devotion of animals to the god.
