Lot Essay

In the present painting, six ladies relax on a wide marble terrace as storm clouds gather overhead. At left, two ladies share a hookah pipe while another fans them with a peacock morchal from behind. Two figures seated at right provide music for the group, one playing a tanpura as the other claps along. Four fantail doves feed in the center of the terrace, while a sixth figure pushes a flock of doves from a high perch.
