Lot Essay

The present painting depicts Maharaja Shri Gaj Singh seated on a terrace listening to three lady musicians. He is shown wearing a white jama and a large Jodhpur-style turban adorned with pearls, pom-poms and precious stones. Three attendants stand behind the ruler, two holding shields and one waving a peacock morchal. The terrace overlooks a manicured garden, beyond which lies a small cityscape atop tree-lined outcrops. Gray clouds and flocks of birds glide across the sky.
