Lot Essay

Raja Bahadur Gopal Das of Karera ruled under Rawat Jaswant Singh, 7th Rawat of Deogarh (r.1737-1776). In the present painting, the raja is depicted in profile wearing a white jama, large turban, and gold-trimmed sashes with a dagger tucked into them. He is portrayed holding a mala in his right hand and a rose in his left. A yellow groundline, solid blue background, and a white sky with loosely painted clouds comprise the rest of the composition.
