Lot Essay

Striding in alidhasana on prostrate Ganapati over a lotus base, the present Mahakala holds a curved knife and a skull cup in his principle hands and a damaru, a skull mala, a trident, a lasso and elephant skin in the others. He is clad in tiger skin and adorned with a garland of severed heads. His face with bared fangs and bulging eyes is surmounted by a skull tiara. His hair rises in waves, supporting a vajra and serpent. He is backed by an aureole of flames, with Shadakshari Lokeshvara at the top centre flanked by dancing dakinis, and Shri Devi at the bottom centre flanked by Kshetrapala and another protector deity.
