Lot Essay

Striding in alidhasana on snakes over a lotus base, Hayagriva is depicted clad in a tiger skin and adorned with a garland of severed heads. His representation here consists of three faces and six arms, his outstretched hands holding various ritual implements. His ferocious faces feature bared fangs and bulging eyes, surmounted by a skull crown. His hair rises upright in waves, revealing three green horse heads. Set against a mountainous landscape, Hayagriva is backed by an aureole of flames. Above him, Tsongkhapa is depicted, flanked by his disciples Khedrup and Gyaltsab, while below, Pehar is positioned between Hayagriva Heruka and White Jambhala.
Compare the present lot to a Hayagriva painting sold at Sotheby’s New York on 16 September 2015, lot 459.
