Artist's Statement:
Luis A. Gutierrez is a multidisciplinary artist who connects our past and present by drawing inspiration from hidden and misconstrued historical events caused by colonialism and imperialism. Gutierrez creates multi-layered paintings and installations by combining textured and colorful canvases, black paintings, and screen-printed images of laborers sourced from archives. Inspired by his family history of manual labor, Gutierrez distorts the photos of these laborers, reinforcing the notion of manipulation as a mechanism of deflection. The way he builds his work in layers connects to his formative years as a teenage immigrant, where he pieced together his surroundings to create a new identity.

Biography:
Gutierrez recently received a commission from The Shed (NYC) to create an installation for the 23/24 Open Call. He exhibited Entre Sombras | Between Seams, a solo show at The Cherry Arts Gallery (NY). In 2022, he was resident at the Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts (NY). In addition, Gutierrez has received a grant from the City Artist Corps Grant (NYC), and the AIM fellowship at The Bronx Museum of the Arts (NYC). In 2019, he exhibited his first solo show at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts (PA). In 2016, spectrum Miami Art Fair awarded him the Launchpad Artist Award and a site-specific installation. Gutierrez has also shown at the Coral Springs Museum of Art (FL), private galleries, and Christie's (NYC). His work is included in public collections like the American Civil Liberties Union (NYC).
