5 O’clock Shadows captures a Hudson Valley creek as the sun starts to set. Painted in mid-April of this year, Kelly Roberts found herself painting from life and drawing inspiration from the landscape as quarantine kept her away from New York City and away from her usual large-scale figurative work.
This oil on canvas is a playful study of light and color--representational, but teetering towards abstraction. Shadows and reflections hold a particular draw for Roberts and continue to direct her entire body of work. 5 O’clock Shadows is the final work of a limited-palette, small-scale series depicting various objects found around the home: a Weber grill, lawn chairs, pool floats, and many pieces of fruit.
