A gargantuan waterfall cascading down the mountainside, Above Skógafoss (2020) is a bold display that captures the senses by inviting interaction. Framing the waterfall from above, the artist leaves room for the viewer to imagine their own scale in the scene. Rolling green hills climb up from a black sand river bed and deposit you in a flowing waterfall full of texture. The hand beaded streams and mist add a physical element that allows the viewer to leave the imagined and experience Skógafoss with multiple senses. The California-born Thorpe finds inspiration in the grand landscapes of Ansel Adams and Andreas Gursky as well as experiential artist Olafur Eliasson. With an innate interest in the ocean and coastal landscapes her work often features animated shorelines and vivid flora that result from their proximity to water. Her photography condenses the sublime aspects of our natural world into a format that is approachable; she conveys human scale by including recognizable features, both natural and manmade, allowing the viewer to immerse themselves in her scenes.
