Through the use of multiple layers and different materials, El Caminante (2019) is an example of Gutierrez's approach to his latest work. A black and white photo of a man carrying banana bunches on his back is repeated twice and colored with pencils. By Intentionally leaving parts of raw canvas uncovered the artist allows a variety of textures to take shape on the surface; while the bold contrast of yellows and blues applied against dark tones offer an exuberant visual effect.
Luis A. Gutierrez is currently a 2020 AIM fellow artist at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. In 2019, He exhibited "Entre Sombras, From Figuration to Abstraction" (solo) at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. His work has also been exhibited in private galleries and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. In 2016, Spectrum Miami Art Fair awarded him with the "Launchpad Artist Award" and a site specific installation.
Gutierrez is a mixed-media artist bringing together a variety of materials to create multi-layer paintings. His fascination with historical events centered around social injustices and the effects of imperialism drive his investigations, as much as materials and their physical qualities determine the composition of his work. Gutierrez translates these ideas into his practice by creating artworks containing sections from different pieces, modified and distorted historical photographs to present the viewer with new possibilities, just as history is altered to tell a story from a specific point of view. As a result, He constructs paintings where mixed-media share the same surface, functioning together as fragments of different bodies to create a new visual language.
