“CB's is over!” yelled her coworker as she boarded the after-work Manhattan bound company shuttle. The iconic gritty days of the rock and roll and punk subculture of CBGB was indeed over, but its spirit was very much alive. It was exactly this spirit that Candice Yates aimed to capture.

Beginning in 2007, Yates elected herself the unofficial photographer of several up-and -coming bands, but it was with the New York City based neo-classic rock band Social Hero, that she formed the strongest and longest lasting friendship. Formed in 1998 by best friends front man David Llyod and bassist Brandon Lotti, pictured here, the band was a true family affair with David's father Ian Lloyd (Stories, 1972-1974) on back-up vocals and Brandon's younger brother Griffin on lead guitar.

This photograph, a gelatin silver print taken and printed in 2008, epitomizes the essence of Social Hero's familial union and dynamic stage presence. The scene is set, Social Hero is at the climax of their performance. Completely transcended by the melody, David pictured in profile, grips the microphone, veins pulsating in his neck, he lets out a rippling wail. Right on cue, a frenzied Brandon joins him echoing a raucous scream. The steamy fan filled room of The Knitting Factory swayed and vibrated, but at this time no one else existed but them. Nothing mattered in this second but the music and their bond, a moment never to be repeated.

Social Hero's first and only full-length album "The Famous,” was released in 2010 on Machine Dream Records. The band parted ways shortly after the album’s release but their legacy will forever be celebrated in Candice Yates’ arresting imagery.
