Diyang Zhou was born and raised in southwest China. The Karst topography, featuring mountains, caves, and cascades, of his hometown encourages him to create amorphous genie-like figures to evoke intense feelings in his works. The appearances of the figures are inspired by the masks of the local Nuo opera, a dramatic folk art that originated from a primordial religion where the performers aim to drive away the evil spirits and petition for blessings from the gods.
