Hand sewn together, Cargando (2020) is an example of Luis A. Gutierrez's goal to juxtapose abstract painting and historical images. The black and white photo depicting men loading banana bunches offers a striking contrast against the prominent red and purple colors. Gutierrez creates subtle but interesting multi-layered textural effects by applying paint on a raw canvas without a brush.
Gutierrez is a 2022 resident at Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts, a 2021 recipient of the New York City Artist Corps Grant, an online resident at Silver Art Projects, and a 2020 AIM fellow artist at The Bronx Museum of the Arts. In 2019, he exhibited "Entre Sombras, From Figuration to Abstraction" (solo) at GoggleWorks Center for the Arts. His work has also been exhibited in private galleries and the Coral Springs Museum of Art. In 2016, Spectrum Miami Art Fair awarded him the "Launchpad Artist Award" and a site-specific installation.
