Lot Essay

This piece created by Toby Basco entitled, “Unknown” (2020), is drawn in acrylic, on 11” by 14” canvas and sealed with lacquer. The scene is trying to depict America in two different time periods, on the left a America in a distorted modern day flag and on the right a post-colonial era American flag. In between the white space, people of different backgrounds, socio-political beliefs, struggle with the idea of where America is going. What was once thought, the ideals of America was clearly defined by its fore-fathers; it now seems to find a society attempting to re-define itself on where to go now..right or left or is there anything in between in what is now 2020. The right depicts a faded but dark moments in American history. Therefore, it remains Unknown as to where America is headed?
