The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The painting is in a fairly good overall condition. The painting has been relined in the middle of 20th century which did not made the paint appear flat in some areas.
To the naked eye, we can see a minor scratch on the model’s hair, upper right (visible on the catalogue). The painting has been repainted on the upper edge (a 3 cm. line) and on the other edges ( a 0.5 cm. line). Some parts of the face have been restored by tiny touches (forehead, nose, around the eyes). There are few punctual part restored in the back. The blue of the model’s cloth has worn out a bit, especially on the left arm. Some very small grey dots are visible on the hand. The painting appears covered in a slightly dirty coat of varnish.
Under the UV light, we can see the restored part already mentioned, plus another one along the three-cornered hat. The painting appears covered in a green, thick and dirty coat of varnish.
At the back on the canvas it is inscribed ‘Louis XV / Van loo’.
