The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
The canvas is reinforced on the reverse with a glue lining. The paint is stable on the support and there is a fine craquelure in natural light. The varnish is yellowed and cloudy. Light scuffing due to frame abrasion is visible along the right edge. Under ultraviolet light fine strokes of strengthening fluoresce along the lower half of the proper left side of the woman’s face, as do a few thin lines around the bow at upper left and along the extreme edge of the canvas. The painting can be displayed in its current state but would likely benefit from a cleaning and sensitive restoration of the slightly discolored areas of strengthening.
