Kändler first modeled a double-snuff box in 1733, and his work report for May that year records that it was specifically designed for different kinds of snuff: Eine Schnupff Tobacks Dosse auff neue Art, da zweyerlei Tobacken hinein gethan werden solche bekömbt 2 Deckel, und hat in der Mitte einen Unterschied [a snuff-box of a new kind, in which two kinds of snuff are placed, such a box has 2 lids and a divider in the middle], cited by Ulrich Pietsch, Die Arbeitsberichte des Meissener Porzellanmodelleurs, Johann Joachim Kaendler, Leipzig, 2002, p. 19.
