Lot Essay

Heinrich Graf von Brühl (1700-1763), was the Prime Minister of Saxony. He was also the Director General of the Meissen manufactory, which allowed him to commission large quantities of Meissen porcelain for himself. The portrait on the interior of the cover is derived from Louis de Silvestre’s engraving of 1750. Brühl had a large collection of up to 850 snuff-boxes, of which about 270 were porcelain snuff-boxes, see Ute Christina Koch, ‘Count Brühl and His Collection of Gold Boxes’ in Tessa Murdoch (ed.), Going for Gold: The Craftsmanship and Collecting of Gold Boxes, Brighton, 2013, pp. 184-194.
