The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

This small canvas is lined and secure on a keyed stretcher. The paint layer is stable. Inspection in natural light shows small losses along the lateral edges, most notably at upper left. There is strengthening in the sky, especially along the edges and in the cloud at center left. Further strengthening can be seen in the sitter’s hair. Some discolored retouching is visible in the sitter's jaw line and in the lighter tones of the sky, just above the landscape. Inspection under ultraviolet light confirms the aforementioned restorations. It further reveals strengthening over the shadows in the sitter's jacket. The varnish also fluoresces over some areas of the jacket, especially the proper right shoulder. The painting presents well overall and can be hung in its present state.
