Born Frances Anne Broderick, the sitter was the daughter of George Broderick, 4th Viscount Middleton (1754-1836) and his first wife, Lady Frances Pelham, daughter of the 1st Earl of Chichester. She married Inigo Freeman Thomas (1767-1847), becoming his second wife, in 1803, around which time this portrait was likely painted. Thomas was the son of Arthur Freeman of Antigua (1724-1780) and inherited several estates from his father on the island. Following the abolition of slavery in 1833, Freeman was recorded as the owner of 464 enslaved people. The couple had six sons and seven daughters, in addition to the two daughters Thomas had by his first marriage to Charlotte Pierse. Thomas had inherited his family estates at Ratton, Willingdon and Yapton, West Sussex, after the disinheritance of Sir George Thomas, 3rd Baronet in 1789. He served as MP for Weobley in Herefordshire from 1796 to 1800. He also captained the Eastbourne Yeomanry Cavalry from 1798.
