Lot Essay

François de Troy was one of the most popular portraitists of the late 17th and early 18th centuries in France. The present portrait, dated 1712, doubtless depicts a woman of high status. Her elegant, richly-colored silk gown and complicated hairstyle reflect contemporary court fashions reserved for only select members of society.
