Lot Essay

Schloss Bellevue, in the Tiergarten district of Berlin, was built in 1786 for Prince Augustus Ferdinand of Prussia (1730-1813) and today serves as the official residence of the President of Germany. Although the exterior of the palace is in the Neoclassical idiom of the late eighteenth century, it has been renovated and repurposed over the intervening centuries, housing a museum in the 1920s and, after incurring severe damage in the Second World War, being heavily refurbished to serve as a pied-à-terre in West Berlin for the President of West Germany.
