Lot Essay

Winged sphinxes feature in the designs of Royal architect Sir William Chambers, such as in a preliminary pencil drawing for a clock (the drawing now in the Victoria and Albert Museum) (see J. Harris and M. Snodin, Sir William Chambers: Architect to George III, New Haven and London, 1997, p. 157, fig. 232). Chambers was also the likely source for the drawing of Matthew Boulton's griffin candelabra pattern.
