Lot Essay

Samuel Johnson's The History of Rasselas, Prince of Abissinia was published in 1759. It is a philosophical treatise on bliss and ignorance, told through the life of the eopnymous prince. Goodwin, who also took the Arabian Nights as subject matter, among other literary sources, executed a series of watercolours based on episodes from the book.
