A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.

Structural condition
The canvas has been lined and I assume that this was carried out by the artist when the central area, measuring approximately 60 x 48 cm, was extended. There is a different craquelure pattern to the extensions than the central area but the overall structural condition appears to be good and secure and no further structural intervention is required. The joins of the extension are slightly raised but entirely stable.
Paint surface
The paint surface has a rather uneven varnish layer and cleaning would undoubtedly be beneficial if required. Inspection under ultraviolet light shows the painting to have been selectively cleaned in the past, with the face and hand of the girl having been cleaned and the majority of the rest of the paint surface still has very discoloured varnish layers. The varnish layers are so opaque that it is difficult to be certain as to the extent of any retouchings applied in the past, but there are clearly thin lines of retouching near to the left and right vertical framing edges and other small scattered retouchings. There is a small circular area to the right of the girl's face which appears to be retouching.
Summary
The painting would therefore appear to be in essentially good and stable condition and should benefit from cleaning and revarnishing. The extension should be noted together with the old, opaque varnish layers.
