It has been suggested by M.A.Dupuy, curator of the Louvre Museum, in 1992, that this work is inspired by Portrait of a Man (circa 1510) by Francesco di Cristofano Bigi (called Franciabigio) (1482-1525), in the collection of the Louvre Museum. We are grateful to Gisèle Ollinger-Zinque for her assistance in cataloguing the present lot.

Condition report
A Christie's specialist may contact you to discuss this lot or to notify you if the condition changes prior to the sale.
The condition of lots can vary widely and the nature of the lots sold means that they are unlikely to be in a perfect condition. Lots are sold in the condition they are in at the time of sale.
PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS CONDITION REPORT WAS PREPARED BY DEBORAH BATES, AN INDEPENDENT WORKS ON PAPER CONSERVATOR UNCONDITIONAL AND WITHOUT PREJUDICE
Not examined in studio conditions. Condition: The primary paper support is a medium weight wove paper, in excellent overall condition with no signs of mechanical damage and moderate acidity consistent with age. The design layer is in superb condition, intact and with no movement and little change except for a slight scratch near the lower edge. Its density conceals the slight acidic discolouration of the paper support, the overall tone being very pleasing.
