The baptism of Alexander, son of H.R.H. Princess Beatrice (Princess Henry of Battenberg), born 23 November 1886, took place on 18 December (reported in The Times, Monday 20 December 1886, p. 9): ‘The baptism of the infant Prince, son of their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess Henry of Battenberg, was solemnised in the White Drawing Room at Windsor Castle today, at 1 o’clock. The sponsors were: Her Majesty the Queen, His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales, His Grand Ducal Highness Prince Alexander of Hesse, His Highness Prince Alexander of Bulgaria and Her Grand Ducal Highness Princess Irene of Hesse. The sponsors were conducted their places by the Earl of Onslow (Lord in Waiting). Her Majesty was attended by Lady Southampton (Lady in Waiting) and the Dowager Marchioness of Ely. Their Royal Highnesses Prince and Princess Henry of Battenburg, the Princess of Wales, Prince and Princess Christian of Schelswig Holstein, Princess Louise (Marchioness of Lorne), the Duchess of Albany, Prince Albert Victor of Wales, Princess Margaret and Prince Arthur of Connaught were conducted to their seats by the Lord in Waiting…the Lord in Waiting conducted into the drawing Room the infant Prince who was carried by the nurse. The Hon. Lady Biddulph, the Lady in Waiting to her Royal Highness Princess Beatrice, was in attendance. When the Dean of Windsor commenced the prayer ‘Almighty and Everlasting God’, the Hon. Lady Biddulph placed the infant Prince in the arms of the Queen, who handed him to the Very Rev. Dean of Windsor. Her Majesty named the Prince ‘Alexander Albert’ and received him from the Dean when his Highness had been baptised’. Also present were: Lady Southampton, Dowager Marchioness of Ely, Hon. Evelyn Paget, Hon. Rosa Hood, Admiral Lord Frederick Kerr, General H. Lynedoch Gardiner, Colonel the Hon. W. Carington, General the Right Hon. Sir Henry Ponsonby, Lady Emily Kingscote, Hon. H. Tyrwhitt Wilson, Hon. Mrs. J. Stopford, Lieut. Colonel G. Grant Gordon, Hon. Harriet Phipps, Miss Minnie Campbell, Captain Walter Campbell, Hon. Mrs. R. Moreton, Captain the Hon. A. Greville, Baron Rothsmann and Baron Riedevel.'
