Lot Essay

The painting appears to relate to Home Again, 1858 (Museum of London). The two models appear in the finished picture, but not in juxtaposition with each other. In the larger canvas the injured sargeant is being helped down the gangplank, as he returns from India. She meanwhile features in the same pose, although dressed all in black, gazing up at a grey bearded Scotsguard.
