Lot Essay

Echo is an abstract print made by painter Mali Morris, in the studio of master printer Kip Gresham. Black contrasts sharply with white, and two coloured circles, one gold, the other indigo, bounce an echo across the dark diamond. The drawing is in the speed and direction of the edges, in the placing of the circles, and at the points where the boundaries of the work are touched and sliced. The image is straightforward, but there is a twist in the space. There were many preparatory studies in Indian ink before the print was begun.

Mali Morris is well known for her abstract paintings, which involve complex inner rhythms of colour and form. Her concentrated compositions engage the viewer in the contemplation of pure abstraction, based on complex layers of space. Morris has had over thirty solo shows worldwide, and has been in numerous group shows at many leading public galleries, such as the Barbican, Hayward Gallery, Serpentine Gallery, Whitechapel Gallery, Walker Art Gallery, The Whitworth, Museum of Wales Cardiff, and overseas. She has received awards from the Arts Council, British Council, DAIWA Anglo-Japanese Foundation, Elephant Trust, and the Sunny Dupree Family Award, and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition in 2009. Her work is in private and public collections worldwide, including Arts Council, British Council, Contemporary Arts Society, British Government Art Collection, Pallant House, the Royal Collection, and the Whitworth.
