Lot Essay

Eileen Cooper is one of the major British figurative artists to have emerged in the mid 1980s. She is well known and highly regarded for her strong, passionate figuration. Her tender, stylised paintings of women and couples are concerned with the fundamental human processes of birth, growth and nourishment. In 2010 Cooper was elected Keeper of the Royal Academy, the first woman in this role since the Academy began in 1768. A retrospective of her drawings, Hide and Seek was shown at the Royal Academy in 2015, accompanied by a monograph, Eileen Cooper: Between the Lines. Her work is included in numerous public collections.
