Lot Essay

Yinka Shonibare is a British-Nigerian artist living in London who works across a range of media, including sculpture, painting, photography and film. Shonibare’s work engages with his cross-cultural heritage, challenging definitions of national identity and history. Having described himself as a ‘post-colonial’ hybrid, Shonibare questions the meaning of cultural and national definitions. This theme was reflected in his acclaimed sculpture, Nelson’s Ship in a Bottle, which occupied the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square.

Shonibare was a Turner prize nominee in 2004 and has exhibited at the Venice Bienniale and internationally at leading museums worldwide. His work is included in many prestigious collections, including Arts Council, The Art Institute of Chicago, The National Gallery of Art, Washington, and Museum of Modern Art, New York.
