Lot Essay

Bob and Roberta Smith is the pseudonym of the artist Patrick Brill, a Patron of The Big Draw. A renowned art education advocate, writer, teacher, musician, and keynote speaker, he sees art as a vital element in democratic life. Much of his art takes the form of painted signs, known as 'Slogan Art'. Central to Bob and Roberta Smith’s thinking is the idea that campaigns can be extended art works, including a variety of consciousness-raising artefacts.
In 2009, he was appointed a Tate Trustee, and is Associate Professor at the Sir John Cass Faculty of Art, Architecture and Design at London Metropolitan University, and leads the campaign for it to remain in its historic East London location.
