An Export Lacquer Medallion with a Portrait of Gustaf III, King of Sweden
Edo period (late 18th century)
The oval copper medallion decorated in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] against a black lacquer ground with a formal portrait of Gustaf III, King of Sweden, the eyes and robe details inlaid in gold foil, the reverse with an inscription above a coat of arms:

Gustava III tius Suecorum Gothorum Vandalorumque Rex Japonia factum 1788
