A Fine Large Imari Vase and Cover
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
The large oviform vase with short cylindrical neck decorated in various coloured enamels and gilt on underglaze blue with two lobed panels enclosing a rocky landscape with pavilions, a waterfall, pine and maple trees, and two panels in shape of tanzaku [poem slips] with bamboo and plum, against stylised clouds with hanabishi patterns, amongst sprays of peony and chrysanthemum and scrolling karakusa, the shoulder with a band of prunus and scrolling karakusa, the neck with peonies and foliage, the foot with a similar band above a border of scrolling cloud pattern, the cover similarly decorated, the finial modelled as a sacred pearl
