A Lacquer Chest for the European Market from Drayton House, Northamptonshire
Edo period (mid-17th century)
Of rectangular form with a flat, slightly projecting hinged lid and an integral plinth, the exterior black lacquer with decoration on gold, silver and coloured hiramaki-e and takamaki-e, the back with a very sparse vine design, the other external surfaces with ho-o birds, camellias, chrysanthemums, pines and rustic dwellings, the design on each side except the back enclosed by a border of formal ornament imitating the earlier shell-inlaid style, the interior plain red lacquer, with good-quality gilt metal fittings and an elaborate steel key, on a late 17th-century English Japanned wood frame supported by Ionic-voluted feet wrapped in Roman acanthus
