A Lacquered Copper Tobacco Box Depicting the Dutch city of Harlem
Sasaya workshop, Kyoto, Edo period (late 18th-early 19th century)
The rounded-rectangular copper box and hinged cover decorated in black lacquer inlaid with cut mother-of-pearl, shell and sprinkled shell dust with a design within an rectangle of the port of Harlem, The Netherlands, with scrolling foliage to each side on the cover, the sides of the box with flower sprays, below the picture is an inscription:

La Porte de Harlem par Dehors [The port of Harlem from outside the city gates]

Inside the cover is an inscription in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer]:

Ter gedachtenis H.W. Kruyer specht [In memory of H. W. Kryuer]
