A Nagasaki Lacquer Casket Containing Glass Bottles
Edo period (19th century)
The deep rectangular box with hinged cover decorated overall in black lacquer inlaid in pearl shell with long-tailed birds and various floral sprays to each side, the edges of the box with a floral motif in gold and red hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer], silver handles on each side in the form of bamboo and further silver attachments to support the lid when open, the cover opening to reveal a compartmentalised interior lined with green velvet and containing six glass bottles and stoppers and two small drinking glasses, each decorated in gold lacquer
