A Pair of Large and Impressive Imari Vases and Covers
Edo period (late 17th century)
With a rare design, decorated in iron-red and gilt on underglaze blue with two figures, a bijin holding a tanzaku [poem slip] and a young male figure holding a branch of cherry tree, divided by fences and a cherry blossom, peonies and chrysanthemums issuing from rockwork, the shoulder with borders of further flowers including peonies, plum blossom, chrysanthemums, hydrangea and pine branches, the neck and foot with stylised borders of chrysanthemums and cherry blossom; the covers similarly decorated with large knop finials with stylised cloud pattern
