A Rare Namban Kabuto-Bachi [European-Influenced Helmet Bowl]
Signed Saotome Ietada, Edo period (17th century)
The helmet bowl comprises two russet iron plates joined with a lateral flange having a beaded edge with a cord pattern forming a pointed crown in the form of a mitre, the front portion extended slightly to form a mabisashi [brim] also with cord pattern, in the centre of which a fixture for a maedate [forecrest] and around the lower part a number of apertures for the attachment of a shikoro [neck guard]
