A Set of Three Imari Vases
Edo period (18th century)
The tall, slightly oviform vases, each decorated in various coloured enamels and gilt on underglaze blue with two kidney-shaped panels depicting the landscapes, one with pavilions and rocky cliff, the other panel with two Chinese figures admiring a waterfall from a cliff under a tree, and eight panels in the shape of tanzaku [poem slips] with plum and bamboo, a carp under a waterfall and a tree below the evening sun, wisteria, and grapes and a squirrel, all panels against dark blue ground with scrolling karakusa, the shoulder with a band of scrolling clouds and the cartouches enclosing a butterfly, the neck with peonies and scrolling foliage, the foot and neck rim with a band of chrysanthemums and foliage
