Two Small Lacquer Boxes
Edo period (19th century)
The first rectangular with hinged cover, decorated in gold hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] and takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer] against a black lacquer ground with two long-tailed birds in a cherry blossom tree, the base with a spray of morning glory, the interior with inscription in gold lacquer and with paper insert with the same inscription:

C. Veltkamp. Aandenken. Akoenoera. 19th July '58 [C. Veltkamp. Souvenir. Akoenoera (?) 19th July, 1858]

The second box circular with overhanging cover, a copper base lacquered black and inlaid with cut shell with a lady in kimono, the sides and base with blossoms and flowers, the interior black
