Four Lacquered Copper Tobacco Boxes
Edo period (late 18th - early 19th century)
The first rectangular copper box with hinged cover and rounded corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a pair of long-tailed birds in flight amongst flowers issuing from rockwork, framed by a band of sprinkled shell inlays, the sides with flower sprays, the interior black lacquer with an inscription in gold lacquer that can be read J. F. Freidoworthy

The second rectangular copper box with hinged cover and rounded corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a pair of peacocks beneath pine, the sides with cherry flowers, the interior black lacquer, with a fitted woodbox

The third rectangular copper box with hinged cover and canted corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, with a horned owl and a maple tree, the sides with floral vine, the interior black lacquer with the initials F. D. in gold lacquer

The fourth rectangular copper box with hinged cover in two tiers inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a Chinese style landscape of pavilions, mountains and waves, framed by a band of sprinkled shell inlays, the sides with flower sprays, the cover opening to reveal the top tier inlaid with a woman in kimono, the interior of the lower tier plain black lacquer
