Four Lacquered Copper Tobacco Boxes
Edo period (late 18th - 19th century)
The first rectangular copper box with hinged cover and rounded corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a Chinese style coastal scene of pavilions on cliffs and three sailed boats on the water, mountains beneath the moon in the distance, framed by stylised flowerheads, the sides with flower sprays similarly inlaid, the interior black lacquer with an inscription:

The second rectangular copper box with hinged cover and rounded corners inlaid in mother-of-pearl against black lacquer, the cover depicting a Chinese style landscape of pavilions and trees on cliffs beside water beneath the moon, the sides with flower sprays, the interior black lacquer with an inscription in gold lacquer that can be read:

The third rectangular copper box with hinged cover and canted corners decorated in various lacquer techniques including gold, silver and reddish brown hiramaki-e [low-relief lacquer] and takamaki-e [high-relief lacquer] on a black ground, the cover depicting a Japanese landscape of Mount Fuji and a lake in front, shops, mountains and travellers on the coasts, seven sailed boats on water, the sides with flower sprays inlaid in mother-of-pearl, the interior black lacquer with an inscription in gold lacquer:
