An Imari Shaving Basin
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
Decorated in iron-red, green enamel and gilt on underglaze blue with two karashishi [lion dogs] frolicking around a flowerpot containing branches of peony on a balustraded terrace, encircled to the rim with various shells and seaweed divided by three cartouches enclosing peonies, the reverse with two sprays of plum, pierced for hanging
