An Imari Vase
Edo period (late 17th - early 18th century)
The oviform vase with slightly everted cylindrical neck, decorated in iron-red, green enamel and gilt on underglaze blue with four shaped panels alternately depicting peony and cherry behind a fence and a dragon amongst scrolling clouds encircling a stylised ju (felicitation or longevity) character, divided by flowers and scrolling foliage, all above bands of karakusa and scrolls, the shoulder with alternate shaped panels containing a ho-o bird and peony flowerheads divided by clematis flowers and scrolling foliage, the neck with a band of stylised flowers
